Birmingham Control
Systems, Inc. is based in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Our philosophy is to design, engineer, and
manufacture the highest quality control panels in the industry. By
constantly monitoring each stage of the control panel build, from initial
engineering and design to final testing, we can guarantee a quality panel
every time. We design quality from the start. HISTORY Birmingham Control Systems, Inc. was established in 1995. The company is located in Birmingham, Alabama and operates from a 6500 square foot facility with 1500 square feet of office area and 5000 square feet of production and warehouse space. The current president of Birmingham Control Systems, Inc., Sammy Montalbano P.E., is a registered Engineer with over 20 years of experience in electrical controls. Sammy has worked for several companies in a number of different industries. His industrial automation and control experience includes Automotive, Food & Beverage, Chemical, Pulp & Paper, Water/Waste Treatment, and Utilities. The company originally started out manufacturing control panels. In 1999, Birmingham Control Systems Inc. began providing turnkey buildings complete with control panels, battery systems and chargers, AC & DC breakers, transfer switches, eyewash stations, etc. With the addition of control buildings, we are able to provide customers with a complete turnkey solution for substation controls. Birmingham Control Systems, Inc. has successfully completed many projects for electrical cooperatives, municipal electric systems, investor owned utilities, government and industrial power users.
PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Birmingham Control Systems, Inc. engineers, designs, and manufactures electrical control panels for both industrial automation and control and for electrical distribution and utility equipment protection, monitoring, and control. We purchase PLC's, protective relays, power meters, and various control components manufactured by companies such as; General Electric, Siemens, Schweitzer, Alstom, and Allen-Bradley. These items are installed in either off the shelf enclosures or custom designed and manufactured sheet metal enclosures. The panels are then wired and tested according to design drawings prepared by our engineering staff. The value we add to our raw material is the engineering and design knowledge which combines the characteristics of the individual items into a cohesive, functional control system.
We have the capability of producing control panels and switchboards of various types of construction utilizing all types of relays whether they are electromechanical, solid state, or microprocessor based. We can assemble and wire the relays in an indoor type enclosure, open back type switchboard, outdoor enclosure, or complete substation power center. All of our enclosures are custom made and can be manufactured using mild steel, pre-galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.
Our control systems range from a single control panel that is part of an indoor or outdoor enclosure, to a multi section switchboard lineup that is generally installed inside a control building. On the upper end of the price scale is our complete substation power center.
The substation power center consists of a prefabricated concrete or metal building that contains heating, ventilation, lighting, backup battery systems, AC and DC distribution panel boards, and the substation protection and metering switchboards. These buildings range in size from 11’ x 13' x 10' to 16' x 50' x 10' depending on the size and complexity of the substation.
The services we offer vary according to the customer. Detailed equipment drawings, test reports, and instruction manuals are provided for all orders. Engineering services such as PLC programming, HMI and SCADA configuration, system short circuit and protective relay coordination studies along with detailed connection diagrams between our equipment and the customer's other external equipment can be provided.
All of our drawings are done in Auto Cad “.dwg” format . We have the ability to carry out a project where we produce all of the drawings. We can also work with customer furnished drawings if required. We have our own standards and preferences in the manner which we prepare our documents, but have the willingness to adapt to our customers' drawing standards and methods.
Our testing procedures conform to ANSI /IEEE C37.21. Section 5.3 Production Tests. Each order is tracked using a quality assurance program which documents the procedures we follow when entering a customer’s purchase order through engineering, production, testing and shipping. Additional levels of testing and written test reports are available as specified.
